Happy Thanksgiving

I can hardly believe that it is almost December. This year has flown by quicker than any before and I am told by those older and wiser than thou that it only gets worse. I know they are right, the past ten years have been a blur. Does time fly so fast for you as well?

As I am writing this we are busy preparing our menu and home to host Thanksgiving dinner. We are really looking forward to our dinner. It is such an important time to come together and bring things back down to earth. Good food, good company, good memories. We have planned a full menu of seasonal favorites and hope our family enjoys eating it just as much as we have enjoyed preparing it.

Some of our recipes are becoming tradition. Take the Sweet Potato Biscuits for example. I started baking these tasty treats for Thanksgiving in 1998. I was 18 at the time and baking in my aunt’s kitchen in Tennessee for a gathering with my father’s side of the family. (Goodness that seems like a lifetime ago.) The recipe came from a restaurant located on the Outer Banks of NC called Kelly’s, which was a favorite of mine at the time. They serve them up hot with butter at the beginning of your meal. One bite and I was hooked. If you are visiting the Outer Banks anytime in the future, go go go!

A newer addition to our menu, but quickly becoming a favorite are the Maple + Hazelnut Roasted Brussel Sprouts. This recipe is also considered vegetarian and vegan. We started making this one two years ago and it will be returning for a third time this year. The brussel sprouts are roasted in the oven with a coating of maple syrup so that they caramelize a bit, then tossed with chopped hazelnuts and served immediately. It is a quick recipe to prepare and makes a big impact if you have fans of the vegetable in your party. None of our family had ever tasted anything quite like it and were pleasantly surprised.

Lastly we would like to introduce you to Browned Butter Butternut Squash. This is another recipe we started making two years ago that is also returning for a third time this year. Anything in browned butter is usually good. Squash sautéd in browned butter turns a non-eater of squash into a happy squash eater. Myself included. This recipe is also quick and easy, especially if you dice the squash ahead of time, like the day before, and store the cubes in the fridge for quick prep.

Jason and I would like to wish everyone a Happy, Safe and Enjoyable Thanksgiving. We will see you on the flip-side, stuffed and suffering the effects of our turkey tryptophan to our hearts content :)

Our DIY To-Do List

Oh me oh my we are so busy planning, planning, planning for fall! We have five different dessert tables coming your way in the next two months and we are super duper excited about them. Jason has taken on two of them himself, both of which are movie related themes, can't wait to see them all finished! We are also working on our Autumn theme and two Halloween tables as well, which just so happens to be my favorite time of year.

Aside from all that though, we wanted to share with you a little list that has been growing and growing on our favorite website, Pinterest. As most of you know, the DIY movement has been one of the best things to blossom and take off out of this financial recession. People are always looking for ways to save, and what better way than to make something yourself? We are no stranger to DIY and we often find ourselves searching for alternative ways to accomplish our goals, ways that do not involve huge amounts of cash, but huge amounts of creativity and effort instead. Often times the reward to doing things yourself is two-fold, you save money of course, but you also feel great about having accomplished something yourself. At least we do! So without further ado, here are a few things we are looking forward to DIY'ing in the near future and few things we have already DIY'ed!

Glitter Monogram Cake Toppers

Glitter Glitter everywhere! The glitter trend is in full effect and these cake toppers really stand out. They are sophisticated, elegant and fantabulous! Glitter has a reputation to be a love/hate relationship with most people. Me? I love it! Jason? He hates it! That isn't going to stop me from making this charming little Monogram though, perhaps not for a cake but framed instead...

Make Your Own Three Ring Binder

This is one we have already made, for our daughter for school this year. The tutorial shows a woodgrain contact paper and some buttons and floral and gingham paper accents. We chose to go glam with ours and used silver contact paper, purple glitter ribbon, zebra striped paper accents and some really cool glass beads. Jules loved it and was so proud to have something truly unique and special to use for her first year of middle school! (unfortunantly she has left it in her locker since the first day and I have not been able to photograph it for the blog, sorry!) This project can be made even easier if you purchase a very plain jane binder to start off with if you are having trouble finding the binder inserts.

Giant Number Pinata

Man this pinata puts all others to shame IMO. To top it off it is a completely homemade design. Serioulsy, how pretty is this? So pretty I might not want to smash it! We plan to use this tutorial to help us build a pinata for on of the movie themed dessert tables we mentioned earlier. It might be a bit of an undertaking but we are up to the challenge and think the payoff and reward will be worth it :)

Ruffled Crepe Paper Garland

This is another DIY we have tried and succeeded at this year. This tutorial appealed to our easy and beautiful side. The one that says, "This is really simple to do and it looks very professional and classy, let's do it!" We used ours for our Southern Heirloom Dessert Table at the beginning of the summer and it really lent the extra charm we were looking for. The first picture is the original inspiration from MADE. The second is our own DIY version. The possibilities with this kind of decoration are vast, make it bright, make it muted, make it charming, it's all in the color choice! Check out our how-to here!

Tissue Tassel Garland

This garland is just about the most fun thing we've seen hanging around! Constructed of rope and tissue paper it is truly a masterpiece. We have not tried this one out yet but it is next up on our list and we will be blogging our adventure. I can't wait to use it on one of our halloween parties this fall!

Well there you have it. Five DIY projects to keep you busy for a while.

We would love for you to join us in the DIY movement and share any great projects you have made or plan to make with us as well!

A Novel Hangover

Lately I've been reading. A lot. In fact I have read five books in the past five weeks. To those who know me well I am sure this comes as no surprise, I have always loved to sit down with a good book and lose myself in the story. Ever since I was in grade school, reading has been a favorite pastime. Over the past few years however I found it increasingly difficult to sit down and read. I found that my mind wandered away from the story and back onto my daily life and all the things I needed to be doing instead. I just couldn't take the time to sit still, read, and enjoy. I am sure having another child may have had something to do with that :) Just a guess. Anyhow, I have resumed my favorite pastime with great enthusiasm. So much so in fact, I read the fifth book on my list in two days. Effectively giving me a novel hangover in which I caught myself so engrossed that I was still awake at 3am trying to finish the book. I promised myself I would not return to the library again until I finished a few work related projects :)

My book choices were all popular fiction novels, three of the Sookie Stackhouse series by Charlaine Harris, The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo by Steig Larsson, and The Help by Kathryn Stockett.

Why Sookie Stackhouse?

I too am all caught up in the appeal of the vampire novel. I used to read Anne Rice way back when she wrote glorious tales like The Vampire Lestat and Taltos. Jason and I are both also hooked on the HBO series True Blood and if you watch it, then you know the Sookie Stackhouse novels were the inspiration for the series. I wanted to compare the two, the books and the series on TV. So far, the series on TV is about 60% made up and 40% from the books. So I don't plan to quit either since the storylines are both entertaining on their own.

Why Lisbeth Salander, The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo?

Why not? Everyone is reading or has read this book, I had to see what the fuss was about. The novel was riveting in mystery, who-dun-it, suspense and thrill. This book reminded me of the appeal that The DaVinci Code had when I read it. I love these kind of stories and I bet most everyone else does to based on the success of the series. I can't wait to read books two and three, of which it is rumored are better than the first. We shall see, but I do have my hopes up!

Why The Help?

I love a good period piece and being a fan of the ultra hit series on TV Mad Men that is also based in the early 60's, I couldn't pass this one up. This book was heart-warming and shocking at the same time, and who wouldn't carry a cheer for the heroines of the story? I honestly couldn't put this book down and mostly read it all in the span of one afternoon and night. Thank you Mom for the recommendation, I haven't enjoyed a book so much in a really long time. And oh by the way, in case you didn't know, Kathryn Stockett, the author, is a bit of an interesting success story in her own right. Google her and find out how many time she had to actually submit this novel before anyone would agree to publish it!

If you have any recommendation of what I should read next please do not hesitate to leave it in the comments! I plan to make a reading list for the coming winter and would love to hear what you think is good!

Walk Through a Wedding with Justin & Mary, Charlotte NC

It was a warm pleasant early spring day. The kind you hope for all winter long. The kind that make you want to spend all day outside soaking in every last ray in the hopes that it will hold you over until the next one comes along and winter breaks for good. A perfect weather day in my book. (Perfect weather makes me very happy and always increases my mood exponentially.) Jason and I were on a road trip, destination Charlotte, NC. Well technically Davidson, NC, but tomatoe/tomato one is right outside the other. The cooler was in the back filled to the brim with cupcakes, we journeyed south for three hours.

Our mission: Deliver Honey Bee cupcakes to Justin & Mary Marantz and Julia (J2 their wonderful assistant) for their Walk Through a Wedding w/ J&M Workshop. Theme: American Honey.

Now you are probably wondering, "Who are Justin & Mary? What is a Walk Through a Wedding? What does any of that have to do with cupcakes?" Well let me just tell you...

Who?

Justin & Mary are a husband and wife photography team based out of New Haven, Connecticut. We have found them to be very inspiring along the entrepreneurial path/adventure that we have been on for the past year. They write an extremely comprehensive and motivational blog to accompany their photographs, inspiring even the smallest of business owners and startups to follow their dream, stay true to themselves, and never give up trying!

What?

The Walk Through a Wedding w/ J&M Workshop is where we will literally walk you through an entire wedding day with Justin & Mary! In it, we will cover everything from the getting ready details to shooting in a dark church to posing the couple portraits to shooting the reception & details. We will have everything set up to be just like a real wedding, so this is literally a one-stop shop for all those things you struggle with! ** This workshop is aimed at fellow photographers and is limited to 20 seats.**

Walk Through a Wedding Workshop Attendees making magic!

Sounds cool, what in the world does that have to do with cupcakes?

Cupcakes are an integral part of any wedding reception dontcha know? Once we read about the theme for the The Walk Through a Wedding w/ J&M Workshop in Charlotte (the closest they would be traveling to us), American Honey and saw their dreamy dreamboard of visionary wonderment that inspires the entire day of the workshop, we decided to make contact. See we had a vision too, of honey bee cupcakes, something we had been meaning to try, photograph and get up on our website! Plus the opportunity to be a part of anything business related with J&M had us pumped since we read their blog all the time! So we shot an email over with the idea and lo and behold, they said sure! Our honey bee cupcakes with delicious banana cake and fresh honey buttercream, perched atop charming DIY cake stands, being photographed and consumed by a whole lotta people, makes us happy campers. Plus J&M and J2 just seem like really cool, nice, happy, salt of the earth type people. People like that you just want to do things for, be a part of all that goodness. Or as they like to say, "Spread the Love."

The American Honey Theme Dreamboard

So now that you know all about J&M, the workshop and why we wanted to participate I guess it's time to get down to the good part. What happened once we arrived. Once in Charlotte and we located the workshop reception venue at Beaver Dam, (we were the first ones there making us nervous that we were in fact in the right place), we hauled our cupcakes into the house and spoke breifly with the venue management on staff there. Yes we were in the right place, yes we were the first ones there, no we did not miss the whole thing, etc. Whew! With our fears out of the way we ventured out to find a bite to eat with plans to return in one hour. We got distracted by a shiny object (Homegoods) and ending up not eating at all. You have to understand that we do not live in an area that is blessed with great shopping. Bare bones is more like it, in the middle of nowhere at the time. A store like Homegoods is too wonderful for us to pass up, we ignored our tummies and oooh'd and ahhh'd over the merchandise. One hour later we pryed ourselves away from Homegoods and hopped back into the truck. We arrived at the venue right on time this go round, and by on-time I mean 20 minutes later than we planned to, but just as everyone else was pulling up the drive as well. Yay!

Beaver Dam Historical House in Davidson, NC

We nervously hopped out of the truck and walked over to the rest of the group that had just arrived, looking for Julia (J2) who is in charge of setting up the faux reception and our main point of contact throughout the preparation for our trip. Ok admittedly I was the nervous one, Jason doesn't get nervous about meeting people and usually ends up reassuring me constantly during all my social anxiety awkwardness. Meeting Julia was great, she was super friendly and super nice in just the way I envisioned. She hugged us both, "we hug", she proclaims. Hugging cuts through all the nervous for me and puts my worries at ease. Everyone gushes over the cupcakes appropriately and we give breif instructions on honey pouring and then before you know we we are out the door and on our way home. We would have loved to have stayed and watched the whole workshop, possibly meet J&M and watch them work their magic, but I have a huge fear of being in the way and taking up precious space so I thought it best to just deliver and get on outta there.

Now for the good stuff, pictures! Who knew our cupcakes could look so good?

We would like to thank Justin & Mary for allowing us to be a part of something totally new to us and inspiring, and thank you to Julia for being so creative and making our cupcakes shine!
